Paranormal TV Shows
Paranormal Themed TV Shows seem to be all the rage in the entertainment industry right now. You will find one on most channels on a regular basis whether it be a TV Series with a particular focus on the occult and the supernatural or one of the many Live and pre recorded shows in which investigations of allegedly haunted places take place and a medium is invited to try and make contact with the spirits of the dead.
Whilst the fictional shows are great fun to watch and usually get a huge cult following there is an air of scepticism about the shows that claim to be genuinely able to contact the dead. One argument about shows like this is that something called ‘Mass Hysteria’ plays a huge part in what the participants in the filming of the show, and the viewer’s all experience. The definition of mass hysteria is as follows:
“A condition in which a large group of people exhibit the same state of violent mental agitation.”
This could explain a huge portion of the supposed strange and supernatural goings on that we witness on paranormal related shows that feature live investigations and group activities. Take for example that there is to be an experiment shown involving making direct contact with the dead through one of the guest mediums. The rest of the people in the room would more than likely be expecting paranormal experiences of some sort, after all it is what they have been told they are there for, so the brain already has the implanted notion of what to expect. All it would take from that moment onwards is for someone in the room to feel… say a cold breeze on the back of their neck, and this would automatically set panic in with the rest of the group and the chances are they would either think that they too can feel the cold breeze, or be too embarrassed to be the only one in the room to say that they can’t actually feel it. What it all boils down to is that unless you are in the room with this group of people and not just watching it from the comfort of your TV screens you can never know for sure just how much of what you are viewing can be put down to the effects of mass hysteria or simply the want or need to experience something paranormal. At the end of the day, paranormal themed programs are great fun to watch, but should maybe be taken with a pinch of salt with regards to how much notice you really take of the ‘evidence’ that is found on the investigations. It is also worth bearing in mind that most of the programs are actually broadcast as ‘Entertainment’ shows rather than documentaries or investigative programs so that should act as a bit of a clue as to what to expect when you next tune in.
