Reality TV - Has it Reached its Peak?
In the space of just a few years, the craze of reality TV seems to have swept the world. It can now be found on most TV channels in almost every country in some form or another and the antics shown on the shows seem to be more bold and daring than ever before with some of the programs having to be screened after the late night watershed due to the amount of swearing, nudity and sexual content.
When reality TV shows first hit our screens I must admit that even I was hooked, it may have been mind numbing viewing but it was something different that had never been seen before, and this always attracts new viewers from the word go. I never imagined just how far this trend would go though, and it now appears to have spiralled into a huge trend, with a vast amount of programs all featuring people so desperate for their chance at being famous. Maybe I’m wrong, but when it first started out I don’t think that this was the sole purpose – to make someone famous? Surely it was just supposed to be pure entertainment? We now even appear to be creating a whole new type of celebrity who is literally only famous for having been on some form of reality TV show. Some of these people will undoubtedly make the most of their moments in the limelight but what about those who get a taste of the showbiz life and then fail to make it any further on their own? The results of this must be mentally and emotionally devastating. This is definitely something worth thinking about if you are considering taking part in one of these types of shows.
With many actual celebrities now getting involved in these reality TV shows either as the celebrity judges on the panel, or appearing in a fully fledged celebrity version of the program in question are we as a nation pushing the boundaries of reality TV further than it was intended to go, or is it simply great viewing that is too good to miss? Either way surely a bit longer down the line reality TV is bound to lose its appeal, there is going to come a point when people sit back and think “Wait, why am I actually watching this? I’ve seen it all before” as the repetitive nature of the shows and their housemates/contestants begins to get a little bit too much to take.
Whatever happens to the future of Reality TV we need to remember that the people going into the house, or appearing on one of the singing orientated shows are just that, real people! They have not been trained in how to handle the media, or the effects that being famous could have on their lives and will probably be thrown into things head first when they leave, so they deserve a break as I truly believe no-one can ever prepare themselves for the media frenzy that seems to surround these Reality TV Show celebrities we are rapidly creating.
