Television Science - Wow!

Science might have been your favorite subject in school, or, like many of us, one of your worst. Trying to use those little test tubes or figuring out how many electrons go where was not only boring, it seemed pointless. When were you ever going to use that stuff?

Recently, though, science has become one of the most exciting subjects on television. It is the underlying principle behind many primetime series as well as the focus of entire channels. Suddenly, the subject that had no “real-world’ merit is all over the place, and it’s the most fascinating stuff we’ve ever seen.

Forensic Science

Crime dramas and documentaries completely revolve around science. The days of interviewing suspects and going with gut feelings are gone. As concepts such as DNA testing and genetics become more advanced, they are quickly becoming the smoking gun in solving crime.

Suspects might leave a partial finger print or a single strand of hair behind at a crime scene, and by analyzing that tiny piece of evidence, detectives can now identify criminals with 99% accuracy. The complexity of a science that was beyond our grasp just a few years ago is breathtaking, and naturally, we tune in regularly to see more.

Structural Science

Civil engineering sounds boring until you see it in action. Sure, we can all build a bridge out of blocks, but you can now watch the professionals build huge structures right on your television set. The massive amounts of planning and organization that go into building a fifty-story skyscraper can boggle the mind.

Other shows document structural failures, such as levies or towers, and demonstrate the science behind the tragedy. Seeing how structures we take for granted everyday are actually created or destroyed can take your breath away.

Exploration

There are areas of our world and universe that the human race has not fully explored. We are moving into these areas with astonishing speed, however. With amazing video techniques, audiences can watch along with doctors and scientists as medical exploration takes place inside the human body. Certain ultrasound techniques make it possible to watch babies in the womb blink their eyes and suck their thumb, all from outside of the mother. Other programs take viewers onboard sunken ships or into the far reaches of space.

In a similar manner, scientists have been able to rewrite history to a certain extent, filling in the holes we did not previously have the technology to fill. Science has been able to explain, or at least theorize about significant aspects of our history on the planet, including cavemen, dinosaurs, and biblical elements among many others.

As humans, we never stop learning and seeking new knowledge. Thanks to television science, we are now able to explore and discover our world vicariously. We might only be armchair surgeons, but to be able to watch brain surgery at all is truly amazing.
